As a contemporary surrealist painter, Gao Haige’s machine – the simplest rotating devices of mechanical nature – come apart and expands on black background of Gao Haige’s canvases while parts of human body gently and with care hold, elevate or support the running parts. The Mechanism unfolds in human’s hands overcoming its utilitarian or even material nature and while generating aesthetical strength goes beyond the material.
Gao Haige’s themes transform and regenerate themselves into medium with access to supernatural dimension, as a mega-key to the parallel world where machine have same rights for beauty and sublime as human body in ours.
‘The human form interacts with the machine aspects in a beautiful duality. In some pieces it looks as if the colorful machine parts are a blueprint for the human reality. I don’t transfer what I have caught and understood in my head onto a picture plane, but just draw things because I cannot digest them. I want to see the vestige of what I selected and how I drew through the working process. Thus, my artworks focus on my activity of creation.I confirm a thing which I cannot understand just by looking at it through use of pictures and additional lines. During that process, I found that what has emerged in front of me forms an artwork. This means, I think, that there was something which had to be output from my head. I don’t need to output things if I’m satisfied with them. So, something that urged me to draw was there. I wondered whether or not this is the nature of creativity then.’ –Gao Haige
