The ‘Light and Shadow’ series of works are completed in this past two years. Together with the time they took, their completion is a reflection of life’s subtle changes that come with time. Some of these scenes and images in Zhang Liping’s works still exist. Despite the importance of the scene itself, the light and space we see provided a moment of stagnation and also showed the condition of the piece within the space.
Light itself carries alot of meaning most symbolically and physically, which is an important part of Zhang Liping’s continuous exploration in the creation process. Light give things visible color and it the most direct way to channel our vision and communication. Yet within light, there are shadows. Zhang Liping is attracted to the irregular shadows within the unconscious, where everything remains in instability.
