夏国

Graduated from the Art College of Xinjiang Normal University with a B.A. degree in 1998

Xia Guo has successively held personal art exhibitions at MOCUBE Space (Beijing, 2016), 305 Space (Beijing, 2016), White Box Museum of Art (Beijing, 2012), Chelsea Asian Art Piers Gallery (New York, 2012) and D-Space (Beijing, 2011). His works have been selected many times to attend significant exhibitions at home and abroad, for example, the Second Edition of Changjiang International Photography & Video Biennale (Chongqing, 2017), Break on Through to the Other Side (San Francisco, 2011), “Break and Transcend Boundaries” Video Exhibition for Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Berlin Wall (Berlin, 2009) and Video Exhibition (London, 2004), etc.

夏国的绘画机工作的主要特征就是像素模式,作品图像也是来自日常生活电视和网络中的现成图像,那些高度被关注,经过不断上传、下载、压缩而损耗了画质的坏图像,质量差、像素低、色彩失真是其典型特征,这些图像画质的优劣产生了图像等级,夏国把这些级别很低的坏图像经过编程,再用属性饱满浑厚的丙烯颜料厚滴法,生产出具有秩序的、可触感和机械美学的精美画面,通过对坏图像的美学提升,把其转换为具有悖论关系的“像素”绘画,这些绘画从表面形态上看有“具象、抽象”之分,它们实则都是抽象的,是具象图像受到“干扰”后图像消失的变化过程,都是在一种抽象模式中完成的画面。

这些物理特征的“像素”在画布表面营造的空间中又构成了一种视觉屏障,和以往那种虚薄的画面相比,这些特别物质化的“像素”瞬间又能把视线拉回到画布表面,视线总是在画布表面和营造的纵深空间中不断拉扯。如同我们隔着玻璃屏幕观看背后的那个虚拟“世界”,既能感受到屏幕的障碍,也能体会到虚拟空间的存在,这个特质也正是绘画机三轴XYZ的体现。

我们现实生活中处处会遇到这种障碍,也就是所谓的“墙”,除了通常意义的天然或人为的物理障碍外,也包含着心理、时空、数字、虚拟、地理等因素的障碍,它是信息社会中权力控制方对真相的屏蔽、隔离和阻断,因此它是单向的,也就是马尔库塞所说的单向维度的社会及其单向度的人。

夏国作品涉及权力崇拜、技术演进和信仰转移等等之间的复杂关系。
