FORWORD
Images serve as visual imprints of an era, as well as a medium for perceiving the world and reflecting on our inner selves. Over more than thirty‑odd years of creative practice, Zhong Biao’s paintings have consistently resonated with the tides of the times, undergoing a visual transformation from depictions of the external world to explorations of an inner universe. Amid the proliferation of AI‑generated imagery, he builds spiritual landscapes for contemporary humanity through purely abstract textures.
Intent 330 x 215cm Acrylic & Charcoal on canvas 2008
In the 1990s, Zhong Biao entered the discourse of contemporary art with Pop‑inflected realism. Employing collage and montage, he captured the complex realities of China’s modernization drive and consumer society. Confronting reality head‑on, he captured the spectacles of fast‑changing life from a critical perspective, earning wide‑ranging academic attention both at home and abroad. Entering the internet age, images are produced, circulated and discarded at an ever‑accelerating pace. His creative vision grew more expansive, and his paintings gradually broke free from figurative narrative constraints. Centering on the dynamic trajectories of circulating images, he depicted the accelerated movement and fleeting shifts of visual symbols in the digital age.
Apsara 200 x 150cm Acrylic & Charcoal on canvas 2008
In the era of AI generation, standardized images emerge in massive volumes, eroding the unique value of traditional figurative representation. Zhong Biao thoroughly strips representational objects from his canvases, constructing abstract spaces with fluid, interwoven textures. This marks a pivotal shift in his artistic career. Such metamorphosis from figuration to abstraction is not merely a stylistic change, but a return to authenticity of perception amid technological acceleration. As external images grow increasingly noisy, he abandons outward depiction and turns inward for inquiry.
Parallel Worlds 200 x 150cm Acrylic & Oil & Charcoal on canvas 2024
A distinct spiritual thread runs through his oeuvre: shifting from outward social observation to inward exploration of consciousness. Through surrealist‑like automatic writing, he infuses canvases with his lived experience of the times and spiritual meditation. Layers of consciousness, pre‑consciousness and the subconscious unfold, ultimately connecting to the vast collective unconscious. Each canvas becomes a vessel holding the inner self, the outer world and the digital cosmos, unfolding profound vistas of cognition and thought.
Gate of Consciousness 150 x 120cm Acrylic & Oil on canvas 2025
Titled Emergence, this exhibition perfectly interprets the core of his creative practice. In a state of deep creative focus, the self acts as a conductor and nexus of spirit, linking individual existence to the inner totality and giving rise to a state of flow. When the self recedes into a conduit, uncharted spiritual visions and pure vital forces surge forth from the canvas — the smaller we become, the larger the world grows.
Return Possibility to the Process 200 x 150cm Acrylic & Oil & Charcoal on canvas 2026
This transformation from figuration to abstraction represents Zhong Biao, an artist and thinker who has witnessed tremendous historical upheaval, offering a profound response to his era. It also stands as a contemporary‑art practice that returns to one’s original heart and pursues fundamental essence. Viewers, immersed in the rhythms of textures, may catch glimpses of the pulse of the age, touch the depths of consciousness, and grasp the artist’s philosophical reflections and the true meaning of art.

Introduction
Zhong Biao
Eternity Unfolding into the Present
Every present moment carries the full information of the universe and all the interrelations among its elements.
Yet constrained by the limits of perception, each individual being can only receive a tiny fraction of it — and this fragment is what we call “reality”.
Faith 200 x 150cm Acrylic on canvas 2024
Journey of Energy
Beneath reality lies the world of energy. It has always existed, the origin of all things. Within this realm of energy, we have travelled an immense distance, crossing countless centuries to arrive at this very moment of our present‑day life. There is no turning back. Thus wherever we journey, we naturally take form right there.

Manifesting State through Form
The visible and the invisible worlds are bound by an inseparable relationship of “form and state”. “State” stands for the universal inner connections and latent driving forces of all things, exerting constant, subtle influence without cease. “Form” is the outward appearance assumed by “state” when converging within specific time and space. Art awakens to and perceives “state”, then gives it expression, making visible the hidden relationships deep within reality. As times change and circumstances shift, state transforms, and form follows suit. This perpetual dynamic process — manifesting state through form — embodies the underlying logic that “each age bears its own art”.
The Extraordinary Beneath the Surface 150 x 120cm Acrylic & Oil on canvas 2026
Inward Gazing at the Latent
Upon the horizon of consciousness stretches the landscape of cognition and thought. Beneath it lies the treasure‑house of the subconscious. At its far‑reaching threshold opens the boundless collective unconscious. From consciousness, pre‑consciousness, and the subconscious to the collective unconscious, the inner universe is without end.
Soul of the Mountain 200 x 150cm Acrylic & Oil on canvas 2026
Connection and Emergence
In states of deep concentration, one may sense the bond between the individual life‑form and the inner totality: becoming part of the whole, and simultaneously the whole itself. Flow arises from this union. Through the medium of art, expressions far greater than the self pour forth, and vast realms of the unknown come into emergence. Once the self becomes a conductor and nexus, the smaller we are, the larger our world becomes.

Miracle in the Ordinary
Every mundane moment is shaped by innumerable extraordinary forces working behind it.
