The inspiration behind the creation of ‘Two Simplified Chinese Characters 二简字’ series is to showcase the destiny of a generation. The incomplete books burnt by the years is the fate of paper, projecting the image of a certain strong intervention in words yet easily casted aside. These creations are highly realistic & its vintage appeal very stimulating.
Renowned contemporary sculptor Zheng Xuanbiao was born in Changde in 1972. He is currently working at Tianjin Vocational College of Art, Ceramic Art as an associate professor. In his words, the ‘Two Simplified Chinese Characters’ series is a reflection of his memories growing up during the cultural revolution era. “Paper, its crispness and foldable qualities are closely related to people’s lives. Things that are considered mundane are often easily overlooked, yet indispensable.”
