Grounded by the idea of connection, Mandala Club, a private members’ club discreetly tucked away in the ultra‑trendy Bukit Pasoh enclave, has on its 25,000‑square‑feet premises everything that would foster it among its members who range from creatives to entrepreneurs and business and thought leaders: a gym, top‑notch dining options, elevated spaces dedicated to specialised experiences (think intimate wine and cocktail masterclasses), and more. Its very name—the word “mandala” means “circle” in Sanskrit—speaks of its intent to create what it calls “a community of communities”
While it is supportive of all forms of the creative arts, the club seems to have a special affinity for art—the property is peppered with works that the aesthetes will surely appreciate.
Yang Gallery, as the exclusive art partner of Mandala Club, showcases works by several internationally renowned artists: Takashi Murakami, Shen Jingdong, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Anton Molnar, Tamen, Zeng Fanzhi, Hunt Slonem, Zhou Chunya.

About Takashi Murakami
Takashi Murakami (Japanese, b. 1962) is internationally renowned for his playful negotiation of several styles and traditions. Combining the 19th-century Japanese painting style known as Nihonga–itself a mixture of Eastern and Western styles–with contemporary manga, anime, Japanese pop culture, as well as so-called “fine art,” Murakami’s work is as prolific as it is rooted in a mixtures of places and times. Coining the term “Superflat” to describe his and other contemporary Japanese art, Murakami’s unabashed glossy superficialism is not to be taken, ironically, at face value. Underpinned by a sharp wit and a keen awareness of how contemporary visual culture operates, his works’ shiny attractiveness engages in a visual commentary on different histories of art and the nature of contemporary consumer practices. Murakami is the founder and President of the art management corporation, Kaikai Kiki Co., Ltd. He received his BFA, MFA, and PhD from the Tokyo University of the Arts (formerly the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music).
About Shen Jingdong
The image that Shen Jingdong’s “hero” series created is an image of the soldiers with certain identity. This image is hardly to tell who the specific soldier is. His facial features are vague, and in fact he is a man incommon sense. In clothing and attitude which stand his identity his individuality is replaced by a common ideology.
Shen Jing Dong’s work has an immediate, playful appeal. The images, mostly of faces or figures, seem obligingly innocent, with slight inflections of posture, grouping and posing. They look out, with pinpoint eyes, from seductively coloured and perfect surfaces. The military characters seem to relate to Shen Jing Dong’s and China’s past, they are innocently rendered social realist figures, animated, and progressively combined with an expanded cast of characters of different ages, roles and ethnicities. These new forms of sociability and affability seem to reflect the opening up of Chinese culture, coinciding with Shen Jing Dong’s own journeys and experience – his regular visits to New York and the increasing scope of his exhibitions and audiences.
‘I think that acceptance of ideas contained in my works is a process of a commodity being accepted by consumers. It takes time. At first I meant to present myself as a hero, and then I broadened themes of my works. By my endeavor, my heroes are being accepted by the public. This means my ambition is being fulfilled. The image of an ordinary person like me will be passed down as a hero. A hundred years later, if my work still exists, people will ask who the person is.’ – Shen Jingdong
About Jean Michel Basquiat
Jean-Michel Basquiat (December 22, 1960 – August 12, 1988) was an American artist who rose to success during the 1980s as part of the Neo-expressionism movement.
Basquiat first achieved notoriety in the late 1970s as part of the graffiti duo SAMO, alongside Al Diaz, writing enigmatic epigrams all over Manhattan, particularly in the cultural hotbed of the Lower East Side where rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop culture. By the early 1980s, his paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally. At 21, Basquiat became the youngest artist to ever take part in Documenta in Kassel, Germany. At 22, he became one of the youngest to exhibit at the Whitney Biennial in New York. The Whitney Museum of American Art held a retrospective of his artwork in 1992.
Basquiat’s art focused on dichotomies such as wealth versus poverty, integration versus segregation, and inner versus outer experience. He appropriated poetry, drawing, and painting, and married text and image, abstraction, figuration, and historical information mixed with contemporary critique. He used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for introspection and for identifying with his experiences in the black community, as well as attacks on power structures and systems of racism.
Since his death at the age of 27 in 1988, Basquiat’s work has steadily increased in value. In 2017, Untitled, a 1982 painting depicting a black skull with red and yellow rivulets, sold for a record- breaking $110.5 million, becoming one of the most expensive paintings ever purchased.

About Ta Men
TA MEN, Lai Shengyu & Yang Xiaogang (1978, Hunan, China) Education: Central Academy of Fine arts, Beijing, China (2004) Tamen+ is an artist collective formed in 2003 by artists Lai Shengyu and Yang Xiaogang, who were born in China’s Hunan Province in 1978 and 1979, respectively. Both received post-graduate degrees from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in the Department of Printmaking. The duo has traveled widely and rejects contemporary society’s infatuation with the individual by seamlessly collaborating on and co-painting each work. They have gained acclaim in China and abroad for their Same Room series of paintings, and have since shifted towards exterior scenes in natural landscapes, displaying Western- style painting techniques and thought-provoking conceptualizations.
Lai Shengyu and Yang Xiaogang’s collaborations are part of the new trend of Chinese contemporary art where thought exercises are staged on canvas. The two artists co-paint, co-operate and co-practice, placing emphasis on communication and dialogue, both in the process and results of their work. Before beginning a work, a general theme and setting may be discussed, while the rest of the conversation occurs through the painting as they alternate working on the piece, continuously adding upon the other’s work, with neither having the right to erase the work of the other. ‘An epoch of the late 70’s generation, THEY reveal their attitudes toward realities of society and their circumstances in a different approach from the artists of the older generation. THEY, through interior and conflicting juxtaposition, displays contradictory nature of society that is both corrupt and progressive. However, they do not reject nor expresses any sarcasm toward the real world seen outside the window. Individuals are merely consuming or entertaining themselves.
About Zeng Fanzhi
Zeng Fanzhi (1964 Wuhan) is one of China’s most dynamic and expressive painters. Born in Wuhan, Hubei province in 1964, Zeng is now one of the most globally recognised Chinese contemporary artists and the most expensive living Asian artist.Sought after by collectors, Zeng’s works continue to score astronomical prices at international auction houses. The Last Supper – a 2001 oil painting based on Leonardo da Vinci’s work of the same title – was sold for HK$180.4 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in 2013.
Masks became powerful symbols for Zeng Fanzhi, who used them to explore individuality and express the alienation he experienced when he moved to Beijing. “I saw myself in that mask, saw that in my heart there were a lot of complexities,” he said. One of the most recognisable manifestations of Chinese contemporary art, Zeng Fanzhi’s era-defining Mask Series launched the artist onto the global stage, and became synonymous with the modern, urban Chinese aesthetic. Zeng’s renowned Mask Series powerfully expresses both the personal and universal anxieties, using the mask motif to emphasise the tension between the external and internal self – i.e., appearances and emotions. Within the series, the appearance of certain motifs, present rare and tantalising insights into the artist’s interior world.

Hunt Slonem is an American postwar & Contemporary artist who was born in 1951. He focused on naturalistic subject matter with an emphasis on bright color. Repetition is also a prominent aspect of his work, to Hunt they are a reference to Andy Goldsworthy however the true nature of his repetition is a spiritual practice, a worship.
Inspired by nature and his 60 pet birds, Hunt Slonem is renowned for his distinct neo-expressionist style. He is best known for his series of bunnies, butterflies and tropical birds, as well as his large- scale sculptures and restorations of forgotten historic homes. This series goes beyond mere depictions of nature, delving deeper into the essence of life and the meaning of existence. Against the backdrop of a rapidly changing modern society, the blooming peach blossoms symbolize hope and renewal, reflecting the artist’s reverence for vitality and optimistic anticipation of the future.
At the same time, these works reveal Zhou Chunya’s profound insights and integration of nature with human emotions.
